About Safe Young Drivers
The book began as an article that appeared in The Washington Post and Pittsburgh Post Gazette in the fall of 1994. It originated in the wake of a terrible and notorious crash involving several teenagers in a Washington, D.C., suburb.
Phil Berardelli's intention at the time was to encourage parents to become more actively involved in their teens' instruction. Using his experiences with his own children, Phil tried to explain how, with patience and care, parents could teach solid basic skills and a mature attitude. In the months that followed, many parents who had heard about the article requested reprints of it. In early 1995, he participated in a PTA meeting in Arlington, Virginia, on the subject of the current state of driving instruction for youngsters. Quite a few parents approached him after the meeting and expressed appreciation for the article. Several said that they had adopted all of his recommendations when they taught their teens to drive. Based on those responses, Phil decided to expand the article into a book.
Since the first edition was published in the spring of 1996, Phil has spoken to audiences frequently on the subject of teen driving, and he has been interviewed -- on radio, TV and in print -- more than 200 times. He also has continued to write about driving safety issues and to refine what is regarded as one of the finest books on driving instruction ever written.
